Hi Susan and Welcome, you have a very nice image here. I actually like your uncropped original. It provides a little more room in front of the bird, which to me makes for a better balanced image. Of course, you would need to clone out that leaf on the left side. I only know Lightroom so I'll make suggestions using LR terms. I would apply a mask to the bird and "dehaze" and sharpen it slightly. Using a brush I would lower the highlights on the bright area on the bird's bottom beak. Also, select the background and reduce the noise to the max. Remember, always follow my suggestions to maintain your rank amateur status. And isn't Costa Rica a wonderful place? |

Yes, just like I said, you should enter Original 2. ;) |

Yes I'm thankful for the modern software, because I can't justify the cost of an 800mm. And it let's me create images that are good enough for me. Thanks for pointing out the softness of the image. I never noticed it. |

I really don't favor that, but might work on this image. |

Hi David, really nice silky water. I like the way the water flows through the image. I wonder if flipping the image horizontal would be better to catch the eye of the viewer as the water flows from left to right. Thanks. |

Hi Richard, very nice poses on the birds. They are very sharp but would like to see a little more feather detail in those white bodies, if possible. Excellent crop to straighten and eliminate the view of the dock as much as possible without cutting off the legs. Good image, as usual! |

Thanks Richard,
You are correct, the background was not good. I tried to eliminate it as much as possible and still retain some of the freezing rain drops. Didn't work too well. Think I might try just a plain white background. The image is basically a black and white, retaining only the yellow. |

Original 2 shows the fishing technique a little better in my opinion. The forward position of the wings and the heron's beak is open, giving a better impression that he has caught something. However, if I had to choose between the two images it would be your first one. It's just a more beautiful image, showing a more attractive bird pose, a much better background with the blue water and absence of that tree trunk. Just my opinion, which is always correct. |

Cindy what a lovely image. The dark background and super-saturated colors really make it. Eye is nice and sharp with nice reflection. IMO the wing blur is very desirable. After all, those wings are moving at a tremendous number of beats per second! The only thing I would suggest is decreasing the exposure on the flower a tiny bit. Looks a little to bright to me. Thank you. |

Yes I had to do quite a bit of post processing because the image had a distracting background. I also increased the yellow on the birds. Too bad they weren't in full breeding colors. Thanks for the comment! |
