Thanks to all for the very useful comments. Take-aways: crop a little closer to further emphasize the subject; don't worry so much about a little "noise" - increase shutter speed and tolerate the results of higher ISO. See you next month! |

Hi David. A good sharp image and nice pose. Those whiskers around the cat's mouth makes it look as if it's smiling. Cool! I agree that the background is not good. A "studio" effect. Larry's crop largely takes care of that. Thanks. |

Great shot! Everything is in sharp focus. The elderberry bushes in full bloom make a wonderful frame for the white birds. This shot and others this month have me thinking I've been worrying too much about noise from high ISO. I would have shot this one at about 1/1000 and upped the aperture above f8. Superb job on feather detail and focus on the birds. I would try lowering the black point, as Larry suggested, and maybe warming the image up a little bit - looks a little cool to me, but that's just my eye. |

Larry, I have been waiting for this moment. You have posted a less than perfect image. The subjects and action are terrific, but it took a while for me to pick through the distracting background to discover it. This probably breaks the rules, but I would try a pretty heavy vignette and darken the background as much as possible, and I think a little closer crop might work to further emphasize the subjects. Image is worth saving! |

Just a beautiful image! I especially like the curved wave in the foreground with the white patches of foam. Makes this image really special. |

Thank you. I agree. In this particular image I like the wing blur on the hummingbird. |

Your crop is a great improvement. Thanks. Higher shutter speed for sharpness is great, but I don't always like frozen wings on hummingbirds. The wing blur implies motion and in this image might have blocked view of the bird's head. |

Thanks for the excellent point about shutter speed. I realize that I need to increase shutter speed even if it means having a little more noise from the higher ISO. I shoot mostly insects, flowers and other still subjects so I tend to forget that. |
