Hey David, I really like the feeling of movement in this image. I agree with others about cropping, but would try cropping even more. Since the legs of the lead horse are cut off, why not crop out the front legs and put more emphasis on the two lead horses. Also crop most of the background forest at the top. A sample crop is attached showing the crop, also lightening up the two front horses a bit to bring more emphasis. |

Hi Bud, that's very interesting. Very nice pose on the eagle and the rocks/seaweed/water make a good setting. I agree about cropping out the rocks at the bottom and would also crop the clear water area at the top. This would give the image a more "landscape" view and eliminate wasted space and distractions. You didn't mention processing, but you might be able to reduce the blown-out areas by selectively lowering highlights using an adjustment brush in Lightroom or whatever. Thanks. |

Hi Richard, I like the crop and the bird is beautiful. You really rang a bell with me when you said "I did not have enough lens to get as close as I would have liked". When it comes to close-up bird portraits like this, it's often a choice of shelling out the big bucks for that 600mm prime or using what you have and doing heavy processing. To me this image has that "look" of heavy processing. Loss of feather detail, outlines a little too sharp, too harsh and contrasty, all the result of trying to keep a clean image. Don't want to be too critical because it's a nice image and I like it! |

A unique and beautiful shot. The dark environment really makes the egret and gator stand out without blowing out the detail in the bird. I recently bought a kayak with the thought of exploring the bayous and oxbow lakes here in South Arkansas. We have gators here and I'm a little apprehensive about getting in the water with them. But it must be safe, since you are still with us (you are still with us, aren't you?). Also, I'm curious about how to set up a tripod in a kayak. I've got one of those sit-on-top fishing ones, ten feet long that I can fit in the bed of the pickup. |

Hey Todd, great shot showing the bird's breath. Strange, but I've never thought about bird breath, much less that it would show on a cold morning. Thanks for that, I think. I agree with Larry that the highlights on the cattails need to be toned down a bit. And it's amazing that you have such a clean image at 8,000. Love this shot! |

Hi Todd. Good choice to process in black and white. I would try a little more contrast and sharpening in LR or photoshop. Actually, I like your original better as a reminder of what fun you must have had riding snowmobiles in Yellowstone and getting an up-close look at bison. |
