67 Aug 19 Comment With you and Wayne both posting wonderful images of Yellowstone, I feel as if I've gone on vacation just looking at them. I think you did a great job of bringing out the colors in this image, maximizing the impression of a sunrise with the steam rising from the water. Personally I am biased toward a panographic look, so I would have widened the crop all the way out to the original, except for that last snag on the left side, and kept all of the foreground. I love the light and colors, and think this image might look awesome with a "painterly" treatment. There is a preset in Photomatix that I sometimes use. Thanks for sharing this one! Aug 9th
67 Aug 19 Comment You picked a beautiful location. You did a nice job of recovering the almost washed out detail in the rock face. I would crop out the overexposed sky - it's a distraction and probably can't be improved, and I see that Larry did that in his adjustments. I really like the rocks in the foreground and the way they seem to point toward the waterfall. I would include all of the foreground rocks in the original, especially the long one. And I think it would be worth a try to widen the crop all the way out to the original, to me that would give the overall image more balance. Thanks for posting a good image! Aug 9th
67 Aug 19 Comment I like the idea of composing the image to have a place for the viewer to "be there". Thanks for sharing that - and for the kind comments. Aug 5th
67 Aug 19 Comment Also, if you are going to do much of this type of photography, a 100-200mm macro lens will do wonders for you. Actually, I use a 300mm telephoto on a full frame camera when shooting flowers with flying insects or hummingbirds, to fill the frame without getting too close and scaring the critter away. Aug 5th
67 Aug 19 Comment This is my favorite type of photography - just sauntering along a trail, stopping to inspect the flowers, birds, insects, mushrooms, interesting rocks, whatever. A pollinator on a flower shot always makes for a more interesting image, to me. You have a nice flower here, not sure what species - maybe one of the goldenrods, with a bumblebee. I can see its proboscis as it "buzz-pollinates" the flower. Very cool! In Lightroom I would use the adjustment brush to Dodge (lighten) some of the shadows around the bee and also to Burn (darken) the background a little. The background is attractive, but it might not hurt to darken it some. You could also selectively sharpen the image using the mask in the "Details" section of Lightroom. Just a few things to try. A very nice image. Aug 5th
67 Aug 19 Comment Nailed it! It is so difficult to get the tack-sharp focus on the eye, good wing position and the light just right on that glorious iridescent red throat - all at the same time. And that bokeh, oh my! Great job. Wouldn't change a thing. Aug 5th

67 Aug 19 Comment Although I cherish my amateur status, it is extremely valuable to get you descriptions of how a professional approaches a scene. I'm amazed at the amount of glass you add to the front of the lens and still get sharp photos. With landscapes I am learning to take my time, arrive early, bring the tripod (I don't like to tote them around), and study-study-study the site. I'm wondering if it is typical for you to have a specific shot in mind before you leave. As for this image, it's great - a testament to your process. Aug 2nd
67 Aug 19 Comment Yes it could be sharper but the drama and colors in the image make it work. The drama of the clouds and the colors of the deposits around the hot springs. Isn't Yellowstone wonderful? You have captured the essence - it brings back memories of Yellowstone visits. Good job!! Aug 2nd
67 Aug 19 Comment No filters. Basically a point and shoot. Yes, I think lower and closer to the water's edge with a polarizer would have been the way to go. Next time! Thanks for the feedback. Aug 2nd
