Sir you are correct. I think I have seen this feeding activity so many times that I was just overcome with the assumption that they were all chicks and not even looking at them closely at all. Very embarrassing I must say.

Well, I am going to agree with part of what Larry said. Yes, the black line is a major problem. I don't see a way of fixing it except to crop it. You have the same problem that I had with my shot and that is not enough depth of field to include good sharpness in all the elements of the image. You may have been able to have the bird on the right sharper with a f9 or f11 aperture setting. That is a minor issue because you have 3 birds sharp and the big fish. So, the bird in the background would have been nice to have sharp but it's not a big deal. Having said that, in competition it could cost you some points because it is so close the birds in front. I like to tell a story with the images if I can and I think the Merganser on the left is a big part of the story. You got the eye glint, the beak open and it is looking at the fish-eater with a hungry look. I took the liberty to crop to a
16x9 size and included the bird on the left. Hope that is ok and let me know what you think. A very exciting capture,
good work. |

Michael, I grew up in the farm country of western West Virginia along the Ohio River and have seen this same image many times. These guys love this kind of habitat. Food, shelter a great place to hide from me, so that is where they hang out. You had your eyes focused well in order to capture this beautiful deer. You look like you are close but from a distance it would be hard to pick out just the face. I don't hunt any more, but when I was learning to back in my earlier years (way Back) my father always stressed the fact that you seldom see the whole animal, just parts of it. This shot is a great example of that. I love that tonal effect of the picture. The tonal color of this guy and his surroundings are identical. Talk about camouflage, this is it. The tongue sticking out adds some jester to the image that would be rather bland without it. It may be a doe as Larry said but I think I see two little bumps on the head that would indicate this may be first year buck. They antlers have not popped through the skin just yet. Great photo Michael, I don't see anything that I would do to improve this image. Really nice. |
