Thanks David. I have learned that there is not much of a way to improve the colors on wild life when the image is taken in good light. I did make a mistake that no one has challenged me on is that I said the Duck was perched on a Cypress Knee. Not, just a stump. I will take a look at that background a little closer. |

Thanks Bud. I did use Topaz deNoise and do on most of my images. Since I was shooting a 1/2000 of a sec. on a tripod I am going to blame the Duck's soft/smooth feathers this time. You need to come to the SE and I will show some of the strange and beautiful ducks. I will train you on how to avoid the gators while in the swamp too. |

Thanks Larry I did use Topaz denoise which adds a little sharpening as well as the deNoise. I will take a look at the sharpening in LR and see if there might be a difference.

Thanks Cindy. I think the softness is coming from the soft nature of the feathers on the duck. A shutter speed of 1/2000 of a second on a solid shooting base would not lend itself to out focus issues. I have seen this before on some birds. Some times there feathers are so tight like on Cedar Waxwing that it is very difficult of show much detail and therefore it seems soft when it is just a smooth surface. When you look at the surfaces below the duck, tree stump and Spanish Moss that are on the same plane they are very sharp.

Thanks Michael and I hear you but this is a BLACK-bellied Duck. I could open up some on the brown/orange breast a little.

I think you are right Jason. Just a little soft maybe. I did adjust for that but not very successfully I'm afraid.

Living in the south I see these guys all the time, even in my back yard. I say to myself stop taking pictures of these birds, I have enough pictures of GBH's for several life times but I keep taking their pictures. David the composition is good, nicely cropped to get heron out of the center of the image. I may have flipped the image horizontally so the bird was facing left to right, but that is just a personal thing I usually do. The reason is that we read left to right and someone once told me that subconsciously that view is more pleasing to the viewer of the image. I don't know if that is true or not. I think I agree with Jason on the post
processing. There is not much detail in the feathers and it looks a little over sharpened. I use topaz a lot but I have never been able to use both deNoise and Sharpen on the same image with any success. I think I would have left the background untouched. This is a great portrait but I think you have done what I do very often is over process when the original looks pretty darn good. |

Well Boris sure showed you his hunting skills. I would assume that the woodpecker is a large meal for such a little bird. Good sharp eye and nice detail on the Owl. Glad you explained the outstretched wing because at first glance it was hard to tell what was going on. The wing and head blend together and caused me a little confusion. This is a great story about this little guy's daily life in the wild. Well Done. |

Cool image Jason. Love the clouds and the way they are kissing the peak of the mountain. The 10 stop filter worked well for smoothing out the clouds. I would like to see more detail in the foreground, seems a little dark. Also there is a really bright section on the left side of the frame that I would darken a little. It really draws my attention to that area. I can understand why you stopped to photograph the mountain. I think I would have done so even with the clouds. I would like to see that landscape in color as well. |

I like this much better than last month's image. I don't know much about your shooting system so can't comment there. Your processing looked like it worked for you. I Like the foreground of trees but they are still a little bright for my taste. That's just a personal preference on my part. Good work. |

Wow, that is a compilated system for sure. I had no idea. I have a Master Naturalist certificate form South Carolina but they never taught that. Good stuff Michael, thanks!

Michael what a unique capture. I had to look at this a long time and I am still not sure I know what I am looking at. I will take you word for it, "bug porn" you were there. I think it is a wonderful capture but I still find it very confusing.
