67 Aug 20 Reply Thanks Madhusudhan for your comments. There are actually three layers of background. The hedge is only a couple of feet behind the Mockingbird and then there is a grassy yard area before the small wooded area behind all that. I was only about 10 t0 12 feet in front of the bird. Again thanks so much for your nice comments.

67 Aug 20 Reply Thanks Todd for the comments. I am going to credit this group in part to my awareness to the importance to trying to continually improve my photography. I am getting used to staying at home or when I do get out in the field always being by my self. Happy Shooting. Aug 22nd

67 Aug 20 Reply Thanks Larry for the comments. I am finding that my backyard studio affords me an opportunity to really work on my photos skills. I know the birds are coming back to the same places and that gives me plenty of opportunities to experiment with different camera settings. In the field I seem more times than not to be pushed by the fear that the opportunity to get the shot is fleeting. I need to slow down. I teach that to some of the folks but sometimes forget it when it's me behind the camera. This time of learning hopefully will start paying rewards with more keepers. I definitely be interested in the link to you lectures. Aug 4th
67 Aug 20 Comment Wow, what a find Larry. You can see the difference is quite obvious when compared side buy side but out in the field maybe not so much. GBH's change colors so much from immature to adult and then into breeding plumage I am not sure I would have noticed it in the field. This is one of those birds that we often don't give a second look at because we see so many of them. A lesson for all of us, always look closely, it may be a real find. I had a photographer friend send me this picture of a bird she could not identify, Low and behold it was a Great Kiskadee at a WMA just south of Charleston SC. I advised her to get all the pictures she wanted before she told anyoneelse because the bird was not supposed to be in South Carolina and her find could cause a panic. I guess she had sent the image to another friend and it somehow ended up on the bird internet pages. The WMA was a popular place the very next morning with 3 different birding groups consisting of a few dozen folks. I wanted to see it and maybe grab a photo but left the area when all the cars started showing up.The bird most likely had been blown off course by a storm. Folks can get real crazy and sometimes don't think of what they are doing to the animals. Anyway great story and thank for standing up for the birds. Aug 4th
67 Aug 20 Comment A really cool image Jason. I used to get these guys a lot when I lived it the mountains but not so much here in the mid south. I get them passing through during migration. This one of the brightest yellow colored birds there is in the spring beading plumage which makes them a treat to photograph. I like the composition except for the Thistle in front of the Goldfinch. Sometimes you take what the bird gives you. I don't find it a distraction because that is where the Goldfinch lives and they do love the thistle seeds. The background is quite good, Glint in the birds eye and a sharp image. I may have tried to brighten up the yellow Goldfinch just a bit to give it some more separation form the same colored back ground. All in all a good image.

These birds are so majestic and regal looking. I am hoping one day to be able to get a photograph like this one in the wild. I have seen some wintering here in South Carolina but never close enough for me to get a good shot. I think you have done a really good job in a boat and a canoe at that. Steady hand you have Todd. You got to love this image but there a couple of things I would do a little different. Maybe not better but different. I know it was apparently not possible to get the mated pair in the same frame but that would have really added impact to the image. I do like the bokeh in the photo but I think the bright green vegetation could have been toned down just a little. I find that a little distracting. The only other thing is that the bird is in the center of the frame. There are 2 possible things I would have looked at to make a decision on where to place the Swan. You could have moved the Swan to the right if there was enough water trail behind it to imply the swimming action, that's always interesting or of course you could move the Swan to the left of the frame to give it somewhere to go. Anyway you have a keeper here and an image I would love to have. Seems tp be the month for bird photography. Everyone so far has went with that theme.

67 Aug 20 Comment All I can think of Michael, is poor little wet bird. I saw a lot of these guys when I visited Costa Rica. They are very loud and keep repeating that name; "Kis-ka-dee" so that makes identification easy. What I am seeing is a wet bird and you have left me guessing at to the rest of the story. It's my thing, but I like some of the bird's environment included to help the story line. I took the liberty to crop your image a little differently to include the Kiskadee's surroundings. I also highlighted the bird a little and toned down the brightness of the banana some. I also left his buddy in the image. I don't think he is a distraction because of his dull color but maybe adds a little extra to the story. I would be interested in what your honest opinion is with the change.
By the way I had another trip planed back to costa Rica this fall but that is not going to happen now. Bummer, I love that country for wildlife.
