Thanks Larry . You are correct they are a problem bird. I usually see then setting on a wire and that is not the shot I want. They are usually pearch high so that they can see the whole area and always know that I do not belong in their field with the great big eye. I suppose this is one of the challenges that we wish for. Just keep shooting.

Very interesting image Larry. All of my trips to Colorado have occurred in the fall so the color was really different than what you have here. So without local knowage I don't know if I am qualified to comment on the color but it looks very vivid to me. The mountain with the sun looks ok but the greens just seem very bright. The composition and balance are wonderful and I will agree the the horizon line is perfect for this image. There are a bunch of things I like about the image, the reflection, the evening sun on the distantant mountain and of course you gave me a place to stand and take in the view.

Drama, drama, man you gotta love it. Someone once told me that all sunsets look alike. I would definitely disagree with that statement. I have never seen any two alike. You have created a very dramatic scene. The changes you made were just right. I could not find that bunch of white flowers until you made the change. To me making the forefront lighter added layers of light-dark that led to the drama of the image. It also gave me a place to be in the image. I could imagine myself standing in that spot soaking up the beauty. Great photo Todd. |

Wow, what an opportunity you had photographing such a beautiful animal. I am extremely envious of such an opportunity. A beautiful cat for sure and the action of the cat in its environment really complements the image. The background does not bother me much and could easily be darkened to almost completely hide all the detail. You would then have a clean background and that would have enhanced the view of the Leopard. As far as getting into a position to get a better angle to the cat you may have had to exit the vehicle, slid down a stream bank and I just don't see that as being a good thing to do. An image to be proud of.

I think it is a wonderful image Michael. I am on my way to Costa Rica in Nov. and will definitely look for this spot. The 2 guys on the rock really add to storytelling of the image and the photo would not the same impact without them. I know you like the cloud formation but to me everything points to the large rock and men on top as the subject. I think the coloring is very good but like Larry the image is good enough in details that you could have cropped a little more. That would have brought the subject a little closer to the viewer. |

Isaac I am not sure why I did not use all or almost all the focal length of the lens. I very seldom use the full 500 because the lens seems to lose a little quality at the extremes so I usually back off just a little. Most times something like 10mm or so. The 420 was the focal length not including the crop factor. As I told Larry I let my excitement of getting the opportunity to capture this bird cloud my small brain with visions of image grandeur. Lesson, learned. |

Thanks Todd for the nice comments. As I told Larry, you guys are spot on with the out of focus on the Kestrel. I have wanted a good image of this bird for a long time and so wanted this to be that image but try as hard as I could, it just did not work. I am going Kestrel hunting again.

I have learned a very good lesson with this image. I should practice what I teach. Never, never fall in love with an image because of your excitement of photographing a scene or animal when you are emotionally involved with the subject. I have chased this bird for a long time hoping to get that perfect shot. Well I got a good shot but after studying it I am not pleased with the image at all. You are correct Larry it is not focused nearly as good as it should be or I wanted it to be.Oh well there will be another chance I am sure. |

Beautiful Bird Jason. I love it that you got the action of their ability to walk on the Lilly Pads. I have never been to Africa but I have seen them in Costa Rica and we have birds here in the states that are structured the same. Our Common Moorhen and the Purple Gallinule are very similar to the Jacana in body structure and habits. I really do like that you caught him on that Lily Pad. Good work.

Thanks Jason for the comments. These guys are beautiful birds but very hard to get close enough for good photos. Well worth the effort though I think. |
