Wayne I will agree with larry about the longer glass. I hear a lot of wildlife photographers make that suggestion as well. Their reasoning is that they are not required to get as close and possibly frighten the animal or interrupt their routine. |

I will agree with Mark. Floating around in a tippy canoe is not my idea of a solid shooting platform so you are to be complimented on this capturing image. I love photographing the guys because they are usually busy and their color is wonderful. The 1/1250 sec. of shutter speed is good. I am finding that to be my minimum speed for birds. I love the green foliage and the reflection on the water. I personally don't have a problem with the Cropping. I like it that you have given the Heron some room in front. I also think the water movement is part of the story of this image and needs to be seen. If I was going to make any changes it would have been with the Aperture setting. Maybe a setting giving a shallower DOF would have given you some really nice Bokeh and therefore would have added some contrast between the Heron and its surroundings. It's a great image Mark. Good work. Do you have a life vest for you camera ready for the next trip? |

Wow! That's the circle of life for sure. Overall a great image especially considering your were at the mercy of the guide/driver. They don't always stop where we want and of course then there are all those other cars/loads of photographers to contend with. I have a suggestion with the planning for the action shot. Something I am trying to do now when I know that there is going to be some action shot. I pre-focus on the spot where I think the action is about happen. The worst thing that will happen is that you don't get the shot you wanted. This would have been difficult thing to accomplish, who knows where the Gazelle would running to. Maybe you would have picked the right spot and got that shot you had planned for.. That may not have worked, just something I may have tried.
I love the image. It reminds me of some of the images from Art Wolfe in his book Vanishing Act. Animals seemingly can hide in open view as this Mama Gazelle is doing. Great job in capturing the eyes without any grass distraction in front of her eyes. Looking forward to seeing the images of this encounter in the months to come.

I too live with these ancient animals and see them on a regular basis. I also see those gator photographs that you refer to. I do understand that some of our friends from the north get really excited that they can take pictures of them.
Yours is a wonderful image as usual. The addition of the rain drops certainly highlighted the alligator and it's environment. The thing that I take from your story is the planing you put into capturing the image you envisioned. It's something I should do a lot more than I do. Thanks for the wonderl image.

Well Todd I can really understand why this spot is high on you favorite list. I could for sure spend a lot of time there. Smart move getting rid of the bland sky, it was adding nothing to the image and as you say has that white wash effect on the image.I like your photo, wish I was there.

Michael you have proven the flexibility of using one of those big heavy lens that we all love to tote around. The bokeh with the Dog Fennel is wonderful. I also really like the leading lines of the flower heads up to the wasps. The narrow depth of field really causes the subject stand out. Great work Michael.

Thanks Mark. I have this printed on Glossy Paper and also have ordered it printed on Glass for a local gallery exhibit. I see more and more images that are following this format with using negative space with their photos. I don't think it will ever replace the standard school concerning Nature photography but it is nice once in a while. |

Richard Matheny Richard MathenyThanks Wayne. I actually thought about cropping tighter. I took a look at it but was not happy with losing the over effect that I was looking for concerning using the negative space.
Thanks again Wayne for you comments.
