Michael, yes indeed, a very nice shot. You handled the editing challenges well. You did a great job of bringing out the detail in the feathers, and the vignette works. Larry's comment abut what image modifications are allowed or not in a PSA competition are interesting and informative. I also like how Larry was able to clone-out the left-highlights. I've often encountered noise along a frame's border that can't simply be cropped away. This seems to have been a good use of cloning to clean up your image. Apart from post-processing, you got a great shot!! |

Richard - you've been encouraging me to go with B&W for some of my submissions. I almost chose a Teton range shot that I rendered in B&W. Thanks for the encouragement. For sure, I'll play with this option more often. |

Richard and Larry - thanks! I really like the B&W rendition for this image. It does bring out the drama of the textured clouds over the textured field. I'll play with this with my RAW file that has more data than the download file that you've been stuck with. |

Hey Larry - I like your alternative! By creating a yellowish cast in the center of the clouds, it gives the image a warmer (but still ominous) feel. I'll try that approach myself. In LR, without the radial filter, I tried for that "sunset" cast, but couldn't get there. I'll play with it more later. But your alternative is a good one - thanks! |

Larry, thanks for the workflow tips. I guess brain surgery is easy once you know how to do it. :) Unfortunately, I am even less familiar with PS (and brain surgery) than I thought I was. I tried using your workflow to straighten the barn, and was unable to do so. I created a new layer, but I couldn't highlight the ranch/barn pixels in a way that I could transform the perspective. I tried the lasso and the quick selection tools to circle the barn, but the Perspective option wouldn't recognize my selection. I've got a PS book that I used to try its workflow, but again, no luck.
I appreciate your help, but to straighten my barn, I may need to wait until I get further along in my PS skills. But - thanks for your help!

Larry, not only is your photo incredible without the back story, it becomes all the more amazing knowing the back story. I admire your knowledge and the lengths you go to get the perfect image. Your stories are a library of due diligence protocols for photography. It would be interesting to have a journal of shot strategies to study your method and those of other photographers who also put so much effort into getting the perfect shot (starting with Ansel Adams, perhaps). And the LR crop mode overlays are worth exploring. I believe the one you used is a fractal, which I'm sure you know is a fundamental pattern in nature's construction tool kit. Thanks for sharing all of these ideas! |
